Doing the Things You Love and Why It’s Important

Tapcheck Team   October 06, 2021

It can be easy to focus all your time and energy on doing things that earn or save money, especially during a financially stressful time. However, it is just as important (or maybe even more important) to do the things you love, even if it doesn’t put extra money in your pocket.

Think of some things you love to do. Maybe you enjoy playing the guitar or being in nature. Perhaps you like to spend time cooking or playing games with family. Whatever your favorite things may be, just thinking about them probably made you smile!

When you’re doing the things you love, you typically feel excited or joyful. You may even laugh more often. When this happens, you may also feel less stressed due to the decrease in stress hormones and increases in feel-good hormones in your body.

Hobbies can also provide stress relief. Engaging in simple pastimes expands your focus, activating areas of the brain you may not use during your day-to-day activities. This increased stimulation can increase happiness and improve learning, memory, motivation, and productivity.  How much improvement is possible? Studies have found that activities like doodling increase memory by up to 29%!

The Benefits of Doing the Things You Love

Creates Balance

A healthy work-life balance involves spending time away from your job, doing things you love.

Finding this balance can be challenging when work takes up much of your time. Try to carve out time in your daily life to do what you love, even if it’s a small amount of time. Listen to your favorite music, take a walk, or watch a funny movie. Creating a work-life balance by prioritizing hobbies relieves stress, and stress reduction is critical for overall wellness.

Increases Productivity

Doing the things you love activates the feel-good hormones in the brain, which helps increase positivity and overall happiness. This may help you get more done at home or work, as cheerfulness and excitement tend to enhance motivation. Cooking, gardening (even small indoor plants), crafting, and reading are some ways to improve creativity, positivity, and productivity. Being more active in your hobbies provides stress relief and enhances your sense of wellness.

Boosts Creativity

Creativity increases when you give yourself permission to play. Playfulness can help in all aspects of life, not just your favorite hobby. If you want to improve your problem-solving skills, develop better ways to get work done, solve financial struggles, or think of new ways to approach complicated situations or relationships, try having a little fun from time to time. While doing the things you love may not create income directly, participating in your favorite hobbies can provide stress relief and motivation while promoting positivity, and happiness. All these things can help you be a healthy person, and who knows, they may even spark a new idea for making money after all!
